Amisha Ghadiali

FBC member Amisha Ghadiali will be our guest editor for the Laura Bailey / Dolly Jones interview.

Amisha lives and breathes ethical fashion, having worked in the industry for the past four years, both as the associate director of the Ethical Fashion Forum, working with everyone across the supply chain from farmers to retailers, and as designer of her own line of jewellery: Amisha Elegance Rebellion, which has been featured in Grazia and Vogue.

Alongside the jewellery label, Amisha writes for Ecouterre, the US site devoted to the future of sustainable fashion design. This year Amisha also founded the Think Act Vote campaign to bring fashion and politics together, asking us to think about The Future That We Choose.

Laura Bailey at FBC on the 30th of September

Posted by Alison Whelan On September - 27 - 2010

FBC is thrilled to be welcoming on the 30th of September model, eco-warrior and entrepreneur Laura Bailey. “We’ve yet to have a model in the FBC hot seat, or anyone talking about ethical/sustainable fashion for that matter, so we thought we would kill two birds with one stone and get the amazing Laura Bailey in to cover all bases. She’s stunning, and her passion for everything that she’s involved in is absolutely infectious,” says Courtney Blackman, FBC co-founder and co-chairman while co-founder and co-chairman Alison Whelan echoes this with “Laura Bailey is a double first for FBC – our first international model and our first eco -speaker. I’m delighted to welcome Laura to FBC and look forward to listening to her views on fair trade fashion.”

Laura has written for Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Glamour, GQ, The Daily Telegraph, STYLE and the The Independent- to mention but a few, and as far as her modelling career goes, her fashion and beauty campaigns include Guess Jeans, Ray-Ban, L’Oreal, Jaguar Cars, Jaeger, Marks & Spencer, Pantene and Temperley London.

After stints in New York she now lives in London with her two small children Luc, 5 and Lola Tiger, 2 and writes twice a week for FBC’s media partner VOGUE.COM and for their recently launched Vogue Green Style Blog alongside friends Livia Firth and Sheherazade Goldsmith. Laura is an active and vocal campaigner for ethical and fair trade fashion and her first fairtrade jewellery collection in collaboration with MADE, launched to acclaim earlier this month. She looks forward to travelling to Ghana with Oxfam on a fact-finding and film- making mission later this autumn.

At the FBC meeting Laura will be interviewed by FBC board member and editor of VOGUE.COM Dolly Jones. On the 30th of September Laura will be advocating why it is important to support sustainable fashion and to write about it; commenting on the altering image of ethical fashion and its ability to incorporate luxury lifestyles. Amongst these more serious and fundamentally important issues Laura Bailey will share what it is like working for VOGUE.COM and how she manages to balance fashion, writing and family life.

Holiday Blues and Tax Dramas

Posted by Natasha Frangos On September - 20 - 2010

Writing this blog at the weekend, my holiday in the Greek Islands just a week ago seems like a distant memory – I will be reaching for my tinted moisturiser in no time as I feel my tan fading away with every passing hour at my computer…But it’s great to return to lots of work with many of my AIM listed clients either announcing interim or year end results and opportunities for new work popping up by the day.

There was a general welcome feeling from news that the Chancellor has decided to scrap the Pre-Budget Report in October. Instead, George Osborne will focus on an autumn spending review, when he will lay bare the details of the deep public spending cuts planned to reduce Britain’s £155bn deficit and will set departmental budgets until the end of Parliament. This should provide better clarity to tax payers and their advisors who had to deal with two sets of policy changes in a year. According to the FT, the autumn statement has been pencilled in for late November or early December.
On a disappointing note, there has been much reported on the terrible news that nearly 6m people have paid the wrong amount of tax through the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) system, due to inaccurate coding. Around 4.3m of these have paid too much and are due a refund, but 1.4m have underpaid and will have to hand over an average of £1,428 each. HMRC has now said that it will waive “small” amounts of tax, but for others, it will be collected over a period of several years.
Then the saying “to give with one hand and take with the other” springs to mind – until the tax is actually paid, interest will be charged at a rate of 3%, six times the Bank of England base rate.  But if HMRC owes the taxpayer money, it attracts a measly ½% interest. Quite outrageous given that the fault was their own!
This news has been coupled with a flurry of activity of tax scam emails with fraudsters apparently trying to obtain personal bank account information from people who might be entitled to a PAYE repayment. HMRC has made it clear that it will not be contacting people about rebates or tax owed either by email or telephone. Nor will it ask for bank details. The HMRC website provides guidance on this area: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/security/index.htm.
My first week back did end on a high with the award ceremony for Young Guns 2010 taking place at the wonderful Kensington Roof Gardens – happily the rain stayed away. Read my next blog for details of the day and the fabulous finalists I had the pleasure of meeting who pave the way for Britain’s business talent- including four tailors with a twist and the bright mind behind personalised retargeting which is revolutionising on-line retailing and advertisers.

Scout for a day with Sapphires Model Management

Posted by Alison Whelan On September - 13 - 2010

Sammy & Marcelo at Sapphires Model Management

FBC members and managing partners of Sapphires Model Management, Ian Warren and Neely Reyes are holding a London Fashion Week model scouting competition. Have you ever fancied being a scout for a day?

Model scouts are some of the most important people in fashion and are always on the hunt for the next big face to grace the catwalk and magazines. For a model scout even a trip to the supermarket can turn into a successful days work and many of the biggest names in the modeling industry have been spotted simply shopping or wandering down the street!

To be a good model scout you need to be chatty and confident with a good sense for fashion and an eye for timeless beauty.  As you can imagine, you will be approaching gorgeous boys and girls with what might sound like a strange request so it’s important that you are friendly and well presented!

To enter the Sapphires Model Management Scouting Competition, in 250 words, tell Sapphires Model Management what makes you the perfect budding model scout. The most creative answers will be posted on the Sapphires website and the winner will get to spend a day during London Fashion Week learning what it takes with the Sapphires team.

Entries should be sent in to: contact@sapphiresmodel.com

On Board with Zac Posen’s Z Spoke

Posted by Courtney Blackman On September - 12 - 2010

From dresses to jumpsuits to handbags, FBC board member Daisy de Villeneuve’s custom designed prints grace almost everything in Zac Posen’s diffusion line, Z Spoke, which was shown on the catwalk for the first time during New York Fashion Week.

“For Spring, Z Spoke has a decidedly young, cartoon-y and slightly madcap sensibility, partly via illustrator Daisy de Villeneuve’s kooky-chic prints of smiling fruit, and a Celia Birtwell-esque motif of multi-culti faces,” says Meenal Mistry on Style.com,
