Q: What’s the story on fashion stylist Anne Look? What’s your fashion background?
I definitely always had an interest in fashion designers and elements of design (in general) long before I became involved in the industry. I grew up in Sydney and spent my days between the pool and the beach so fashion as a career wasn’t something that I aspired to or even knew about. It became apparent to me about 3 years ago that fashion (particularly styling) was something I wanted to pursue seriously. My train of thought was along the lines of – where are the best opportunities to develop my fashion education and network lie? The answer was London.

Q: How would you define your role?
I am continually learning more about the business and my my role within it every day. I still find it hard to define but I love to create and styling shoots is something I am so passionate about. It’s such a challenging job and far from the glamour that’s perceived by some people. A lot of it involves surrounding oneself with people who’s work you respect and people with who you can form a great team with…..that always produces the best results.

Q: What is the best part about your job in fashion?
When you are on a shoot and everything that you see in the final product is even better than how you had envisioned it. It’s a feeling. Its hard to define. It’s an adrenaline rush which makes the hard times worth it.

Q. What is a typical day for you?
If I don’t have the pleasure of being on a shoot then I’m looking for ways I can connect with people and make that happen. I spend a lot of time networking which often involves meeting new designers/PR’s. I was recently made a young ambassador for the Rod Aldridge Foundation as well as being a keen supporter of the Ethical Fashion Forum. I have also recently started styling catwalk shows and even have my own fashion blog.

Q. Is it true that you were a professional athlete?
I have spent about 15 of my 25 years competing and training as a swimmer in Australia. I had a world ranking of 58th when I was 17 and competed in the Olympic Trials for Sydney 2000.

Q. How would you describe you personal style?
A very tough question! I think by nature of the job, you see beauty in different forms and it shows in the way one puts something together. I don’t follow trends on a personal level. It doesn’t interest me what colour is in or what IT bag I’m suppose to have. I feel what I’m wearing…it’s about creating, challenging perceptions and feeling comfortable in your skin.

Q: How are FBC networking events important in your job/ industry?
It’s incredibly important, particularly as a freelancer to connect with and understand others working in a similar field. The FBC has given me a window into the projects that others are working on and I have recently teamed up with fellow FBC member Sapphires Model Management and Harvey Nichols to produce a catwalk show in aid of the Princes Trust.

The annual UK Jewellery Awards highlight and honour the best in the world of jewellery including Young Designer, Best Catwalk Jewels, and Retail Star.

Sat at Antony Hawman’s table (he’s the commercial brand manager at Emap Inform and looks after the media partner relationship FBC has with Drapers), we enjoyed a delectable dinner, catwalk show, and festive after-party.

From Drapers to WGSN

Lauretta Roberts

This week is FBC member, Lauretta Robert’s last week as editor of Drapers.  After two and a half years steering the UK’s premiere fashion business weekly, Lauretta will be moving on to Emap’s global style and fashion forecasting business, WGSN (which is apparently just through the café on the right).

Lauretta is “sad to be leaving a title that I’ve grown to hold very dear to my heart,” but WGSN needs her.  They are undertaking their first relaunch in ten years, and we all saw what Lauretta did for Drapers.  She redesigned it and relaunched it to incorporate more industry news, views and in-depth interviews. “It’s another great brand with enormous potential, and those of you who know me will be aware that I like nothing more than a good relaunch project, so this is perfect for me!”

Lauretta will still chair November’s Fashion Summit, which will be co-branded with Drapers and WGSN going forward.  She will also be collaborating with Drapers on content and would love to be kept informed of members’ product news and developments, press days, presentations, shows, etc.

Congratulations, Lauretta!

Easier and cheaper to register your label as a trade mark

Posted by Louisa Hetherington On July - 8 - 2009

The UK Intellectual Property Office has announced the introduction of its “Right Start” service designed to make it easier for small businesses, such as new labels, to register their trade marks.

From October this year, you will be able to defer payment of half the usual £200 trade mark application fee until after it is decided whether your mark can, in fact, progress to registration.  Remember, a trade mark must be distinctive, not descriptive, of the goods or services to which it relates and it must not conflict with other marks already on the Register.

From October, if the Office raises any problems with your application, you will be able to discuss it, on an informal basis, with the trade mark examiner.  That way, you will be able to assess the likelihood of your mark making it through to registration and decide whether to continue with your application, and pay the balance of the fees, or not.

As David Lammy, Minister of State for Intellectual Property stated, “Registering a trade mark is an important step for a business to take.  By protecting their intellectual property they are protecting their innovative ideas of the future.  Failing to do this risks them losing their investment in developing successful brands for their products and services”.
